Going Home

1. From Vancouver to Le Havre

My father Herbert Henry Mann was born in 1887 and became a carpenter working for his father. He married in 1912 and served in the Fleet Air Arm during World War 1. But his young wife died in 1918. They had no children, so just three months after his discharge from the Forces he sailed to Canada on the S.S. Megantic from Liverpool.

He arrived in Montreal on 4 June 1919 and took the train to Vancouver. There he worked as a carpenter for Mr Hallam both in Vancouver and while building accomodation for lumberjacks on a site further North. While in Vancouver he made a life-long friend of Joe Rowlatt, a builder, and was also befriended by the Wiggins family at E 35th Street.

He bought a camera and recorded many scenes particularly of the lumberjack site. He also bought a Harley Davison motor cycle. The photos have come into my possession and are displayed on this website together with the postcards he sent home or wrote on. My father returned home after just 18 months in Canada, possibly because of his mother's illness. He brought his motor cycle home too, arriving in London in November 1920. He never returned to Canada.
