THOMAS was born in October 1715, the son of a weaver living in Mile End New Town. He became a weaver like his father and married Ann CHRISTIAN at the Fleet Prison and then at St Benet Pauls Wharf in London City in 1737 when he was 22. The reason for the clandestine marriage is unknown.
Nine children were born between 1739 and 1760 All were baptised either at Stepney St Dunstan or at St Matthew Bethnal Green after it opened in 1746. Thomas remained a weaver throughout this period.
Thomas probably died in 1770 or 1777 and Ann in 1778

Thomas SHORT m Ann Christian at St Dunstan in 1737 and fathered children up to 1760, so probably born around 1710-1720. There is a suitable baptism at St Dunstan in 1715

This Thomas would have been 22 at m to Ann CHRISTIAN; this is a reasonable m age, and the right parish. Both Thomas senior and Thomas junior were weavers of Mile end New Town and this is almost certainly the correct baptism
The baptismal record of Francis-6 at St Dunstan, names his parents as Thomas, a weaver of MENT, and Anne. There is only one suitable m in the indexes, and although this was at St Benets Pauls Wharf, both bride and groom were of St Dunstan:

Thomas and Ann baptised a son named George Christian in 1749; using Ann's surname provides good evidence that this is the right marriage.
The Fleet Prison records however contain the following marriage

It seems almost certain that this is a prior marriage, even though the addresses are incorrect, perhaps deliberately false. The reason for the clandestine marriage is unknown. There is no known connection between St Benet (near St Pauls) and the prison (nearly one mile away in Farringdon St) so it seems they decided to make sure with a regular marriage just two weeks after the Fleet marriage.

St Matthew opened in 1746 which explains the change of church between Ann and Mary
A son Thomas was buried in 1740 at st Dunstan, but no baptism has been found. But a Thomas SHORT who married Susanna LESERF in 1762 was probably another son, as they baptised a son named George Christian in 1766. This Thomas was buried at St Matthew in 1814 aged 78 which givs a birth year of 1736. The most probable explanation s that the burial age was exaggerated and that the first Thomas was born and died in 1740 and the second in 1741/2. However, neither baptism has been found

there are at least two possible burials of Thomas at at St Matthew Bethnal Green on 20Aug1770 and 19Dec1777 and a burial of Ann on 8Sep1778. The absence of ages or any other information in the register makes it impossible to decide whether any of these are relevant. The 1770 burial could be that of Thomas' father born 1691 so it will be assumed that Thomas died in 1777
