Francis was born in 1755 the son of a weaver in Mile End New Town. He became a weaver like his father and in 1782 aged 27 he married Margaret BLACK at Stepney, St Dunstan.
Three children were baptised in Shoreditch while there were living in Moors Alley and George Yard. Five more children were then baptised at St Matthew Bethnal Green. Hand weaving was becoming an increasingly difficult trade to sustain a living because of competition from power looms, and in the 1790s, Francis was noted as a pauper.
Francis died at Club Row in Shoreditch in 1816 aged 61 and was buried at St Leonard's. Two years later, his widow remarried Robert HEBDEN at Shoreditch. They wereliving in St Ann, Stepney in 1841 but Margaret died the next year

From his age at burial, Francis was born about 1755. He married in 1782 at Stepney St Dunstan when he would have been about 27. Francis is not a common name, and only one suitable baptism has been found:

The good fit with burial age, marriage at the same church, the same trade of both Francis and Thomas, and Francis living at Mile End when he married, leaves little doubt that this is the correct baptism
William SHORT-5 was baptised at St Matthew Bethnal Green son of Francis & Margaret. Five baptisms to these parents at St. Matthew are preceded by three baptisms at Shoreditch St Leomards. The earliest baptism is in 1785, but the date of birth was 28Sep1782. Three months earlier is the following marriage:

Both Francis & Margaret are relatively uncommon christian names, leaving little doubt that this is the correct m; no other m of these names in IGI.

the burial of Margaret SHORT has not been found, but there is a re-marriage of Margaret two years after the death of Francis (see BLACK family below). Both Margaret and Francis are relatively uncommon names, and the remarriage of a Margaret SHORT, widow, 2 years after burial of a Frances SHORT gives confidence that this is the right burial of Francis.
Margaret probably remarried two years after the death of her husband and at the same church where he was buried:

They were in London Street, St Ann, Tower Hamlets in 1841. The parish of St Ann is in Limehouse, but London Street has not been indentified.

The coincidence of names place and time sugget these records relate to Margaret BLACK but there is no proof. From death certificate and census, Margaret Hebdon was born 1765/6 giving a realistic marriage age of 17/18 in 1782. The legal age of marriage at this time was 12, but anyone under 21 required consent of parants or banns. Margaret's marriage was by banns and no parents witnessed the marriage.
There only suitable baptism found in London is at St Olave 20sep 1765, daughter of David Black. This doe not seem ikely as St Olave is south of the river and none of her children were named David. The absence of her parents from her marriage suggests either they were dead or that Margaret had come to London from the country.
