Roger Hempson was born about 1610 probably in Great Clacton in Essex son of Roger and Em He lived through the civil wars including the siege of nearby Colchester in 1648 No records are known of his activities in the war except that in 1645 he gave evidence in the trial of a "witch" of Clacton who was subsequently hanged at Manningtree.
He may have married four times and he had five children who survived him. In 1663 he acquired land in Clacton for his last wife and daughter both named Katherine. In the deeds, he was described as a gentleman of Brightlingsea.
Roger died in 1670 and his will mentions his five children and his wife Katherine and includes £200 for his under-age daughter Mary, the interest to be used for her education and upbringing

Roger's son Philip is believed to have been born around 1640. Roger's will shows that there was at least one child born earlier so that his marriage might have been about 1635 and his birth about 1610. His will was proved in Jan1670/1 giving a reasonable death age of 60.
Roger was of Brightlingsea when he acquired land in 1663 and was there when he died in 1670. It seems likely that he was born in Brightlingsea or nearby, but the registers there have not survived before 1697 and no record of his birth has been found
A Roger Hempson baptised a son William in nearby Gt Clacton in 1621 and it is reasonable to suppose that he would have an earlier son named Roger who could be Roger of Brightlingsea though no suitable baptism has been found in the Gt.Clacton register

It is assumed therefore at present that Roger Hempson was born around 1610 either in Brightlingsea or Great Clacton or nearby, possibly the son of Roger and Em (early form of Emma)
Roger's will named his wife as Katherine, but no record of his marriage has been found. As discussed below, it is possible that this was a late marriage c1660, and that Roger was married before, possibly even three times to Sarah c1630, to Mary Mumford 1640, and and to Dorothy c1645. Only one record of these possible marriages has been found, at Great Clacton:

Thus Katherine and Mary seem to be born much later and given special bequests in the will to provide for their future. This suggests that Katherine was a second wife married about 1660. There are possible baptisms of Roger and Rebecca in the nearby parish of Great Clacton, but the mother's name was Sarah. Possibly then, this was Roger's first wife. She was not named in the baptism of Francis in 1639, suggesting she may have died after Francis' birth. and this is shortly followed by the marriage of Roger to Mary Mumford

The Gt Clacton register however contains a further baptism to Roger and Dorothy in 1647. Is it credible that Roger was married four times? If so Philip bc1642 would have been the son of Mary (he is known to have a daughter Mary but not Sarah) and this gives the following speculative scenario:

m 1640 Mary Mumford. Philip b1642
m 1645 Dorothy John b1647
m 1660 Katherine Katherine b1663 Mary b1664
The burials of Sarah c1639, Mary c1645 and Dorothy between 1647 and 1660 would confirm this arrangement, but the burial register of Gt Clacton is missing between 1639 and 1677 except for 1653 and is very deficient between 36 and 39
It seems likely that Roger was at Gt Clacton until 1647 and then moved to Brightlingsea, but then the baptism of Philip should be registered at Clacton between Mar 1640 and Oct 1647. It was not found there but only one baptism was recorded for the years 1641 and `1642. It was not found at Lt Clacton but the baptism records are very sparse for this period, The registers of St Osyth have not survived for this period.
Roger's will was was proved in January 1670/1 but no other record of his death nor that of Katherine has been found, so presumably they were buried at Brightlingsea before the records begin in 1697
