Alexander WALKER was born in 1732 in Kildrummy where he was a farmer and inn keeper. He married Ann Hunter and baptised at least three children before his wife died. He remarried Margaret Molison when he was 37 and baptised twelve more children in Kildrummy

Alexander died in 1821 when he was 89 years old and was buried in Kildrummy churchyard. Margaret died 6 months later and was buried in the same grave

BIRTH

The gravestone of Alexander-6 states his age as 89 when he died in 1821 giving a birth date of 1732. Kildrummy baptismal records are missing Mar1729 to Oct1734. His first known child was named John which, following the Scottish naming pattern, should be the name of his father. Alexander then was born in 1732, son of John.

Kildrummy registers begin in 1678 but baptismal records are blank October 1688 - November 1697, defective December 1698 - January 1704 and missing Dec1716 - Apr 1718, March 1729–October 1734, June 1737 – Sep1739, only even entries Aug1750-Feb1761

It seems likely that John and Agnes Beg would have a son named John possibly born soon after their marriage in 1707 In this event he could well be the father of Alexander-6 born 1730. This is probably the best interpretation possible in of the poor quality of the Kildrummy records in this period.

But these were interesting times for Kildrummy. John ERSKINE, the Earl of Mar who owned Kildrummy Castle and Estate began the 1715 Jacobite rebellion here. By October, Mar’s forces had taken most of Scotland north of Edinburgh. The battle of Sherifmuir near Stirling however was indecisive and by the time James Stuart (he old pretender) landed at Peterhead in December, the rebellion was almost over. The Earl of Mar was exiled to France and his lands including Kildrummy were taken by the government. Meanwhile an act of parliament gave loyal tenants the land of their Jacobite landlord. Some of Mar’s tenants travelled to Edinburgh to acquire title to their land but no evidence yet that any from Kildrummy did so. The Kildrummy estate was returned to Mar’s son Thomas ERSKINE who sold it to John GORDON in 1739.

Alexander-6 named two of his children, Erskine and Gordon, after the owners of the Kildrummy estate. Probably therefore he and his forefathers were Jacobites like the Earl of Mar, John Erskine. Certainly his gr.gr.grandson Frederick Stevenson was an ardent supporter of the “Jacobite King over the Water”. Whether any of the Kildrummy Walkers followed the Earl into battle however is unknown

MARRIAGE

John-5 was baptised in 1781 at Kildrummy, son of Alexander Walker and his death certificate gave his mother’s name as Margaret MOLISON. There is a suitable marriage in the Kildrummy parish register:

Alexander’s gravestone records that Margaret Molison was his second wife. His first wife is named as Ann HUNTER who died in 1767. There are three baptisms to Alexander before this date in 1759, 1762 and 1763 so the marriage should be between about 1752 when Alexander was 20 and 1759. No record of the marriage has been found but marriage records at Kildrummy are missing November 1752–November 1764 when the marriage would have occurred. Marriage records are also missing July 1704–May 1707, July 1708–December 1711, June 1715–June 1718, November 1719–December 1720, December 1723–March 1731

A gravestone in Kildrummy churchyard has the following inscription:

To the memory of ALEXANDER WALKER, farmer, merchant & inkeeper in Drumnahive d 18 Sept 1821 aged 89; his first wife ANN HUNTER d 8 Oct 1767 aged 36; their son JOHN d 21 Jun 1786 aged 19; his second wife MARGARET MOLLISON d 19 Mar 1821 aged 71; their dau KATHERINE d 1786 in infancy; their dau MARY d 1792 aged 22; their son GORDON d 1810 aged 22.

There are no burials recorded in the surviving parish register
