Robert was baptised in 1631 at West Wickham in Suffolk, son of Thomas & Alice, but spent most of his life in the nearby parish of Linton. His occupation is unknown. He married Frances around 1660, but only one son, Thomas baptised in 1661, is known of this marriage before Frances died and was buried in Linton.
Robert remarried Denise, but again only only one son of this marriage is known, though both Robert and Denise lived to old age before they were buried at Linton in 1708 and 1709.

It is presently assumed that Robert married Frances around 1660, baptised a son Thomas at Hildersham in 1661, and thereafter lived in the neighbouring parish of Linton, just 2 miles away.
The baptism of Robert was not found at Hildersham or Linton, but there is a suitable baptism at West Wickham, just 3 miles from Linton
C 16Oct1631 Robert s Thomas & Alice SPAKEMAN
Bearing in mind that SPEAKMAN is a comparatively uncommon surname, that West Wickham and Linton are only 3 miles apart, that Robert baptised a son Thomas, and would have been aged 30 at the baptism, the above baptism seem likely to be correct.
The family of Thomas and Alice can be reconstructed from the West Wickham register:
m 16Nov1629 Thomas SPAKEMAN & Alice HAILOCK
C 16Oct1631 Robert s Thomas & Alice SPAKEMAN
C 29May1634 Margaret d Thomas & Alice SPAKEMAN
B 31May1634 Margaret d Thomas & Alice SPAKEMAN
B 31May1634 Alice w Thomas SPAKEMAN
m 22Oct1649 Thomas SPAKEMAN & Catherine FLACK at West Wratting (2 miles from West Wickham)
B 12Dec1665 Tho SPAKEMAN
B 20Apr1676 Katharine SPAKEMAN
Thus, Thomas’ wife Alice and daughter Margaret both died after childbirth. Thomas remarried Catherine but no children of the second marriage are known
A possible baptism of Thomas was found at Lt.Abington about 5 miles from West Wickham

C 5May1605 Thomas s Gylbert & Ann SPEAKMAN
map showing location of above-mentioned parishes
It is presently assumed that Thomas-9 was baptised at Hildersham, CAM on 17Oct1661 the son of Robert and Frances. There are no other SPEAKMAN entries in the Hildersham register 1559‑1938, but at Linton (1 mile from Hildersham) the following entries were found in the register:
B 30May1662 Frances SPAKEMAN
C 15Jul1665 John s Robt & Denis SPAKEMAN
B 7Nov1708 Dennis SPAKEMAN
B 8Feb1709 Robt SPAKEMAN
The probable interpretation is that Frances died some 7 months after the birth of Thomas; Robert re-married Denis and baptised a son John; Robert and Denis died 1708 and 1709. Neither the marriage of Robert to Frances nor to Denise has been found, but probable dates are around 1660 for the first marriage and between 1662 and 1665 for the second. The Cambridge Hearth tax shows that Robert SPAKEMAN was at Linton in 1664 and 1674 (see below)
C 17Oct1661 Thomas s Robert & Frances SPAKEMAN
C 15Jul1665 John s Robt & Denis SPAKEMAN
B 30May1662 Frances SPAKEMAN
B 7Nov1708 Dennis SPAKEMAN
B 8Feb1709 Robt SPAKEMAN
1664: George BOWTELL and his inmate Robert SPACKMAN 2/- 2hearths
1674: Robert SPACKMAN 2 hearths
SPEAKMAN hearth tax entries also occur at Cambridge (St.Giles: Henry; St Sepulchre: Susan; St Buttolphs: Thomas; St Clements: John), and Cottenham (John - twice, Robert)
