Elizabeth Reid was born in Aberdeen in 1793, the daughter of a miller who worked at the Justice Mill in the centre of Aberdeen city. But in 1800 the family moved to Ord in the parish of Skene some 5 miles from Aberdeen where Elizabeth's father worked at another mill. In 1817, Elizabeth married John Grant at the Roman Catholic church in Aberdeen. John was a baker in Aberdeen, so perhaps he was a customer of the mill. They baptised three children in Aberdeen, though one died as an infant before moving to Fochabers, a small village in Moray, close to where John Grant was born. Three more children were born there. But around 1830, the family moved back to Aberdeen where John was now working in the linen weaving industry. Two more children were born in Aberdeen, the last one in 1835 when Elizabeth was 42. Elizabeth died in 1845 aged 52 and was buried in St Peter's cemetery in Aberdeen |

BIRTH
Elizabeth was married in 1817 at the Roman Catholic chapel in Aberdeen, daughter of George Reid a labourer in Aberdeen. The Grant family was associated with a George Reid in Kintore (see tree T0), but there is no suitable baptism of Elizabeth to this George Reid in Kintore or elsewhere, though the Kintore register records the basptism of three other choldren to George's. There is however a suitable baptism of Elizabeth Reid daughter of George in the parish of Old Machar, in Aberdeen city.
Old Machar 5 Mar 1793. George Reid, miller at Justice Mills and his spouse Margaret Smith had a daughter baptized by Mr James Gregory, minister at Chapel of Ease, and named Elizabeth. Witnesses James Brebner and John Smith
Although details fit, there is no proof that this was the Elizabeth Reid who married John Grant. This George Reid was a miller, whereas Elizabeth's father was a labourer. However in later records he was recorded as a mill worker rather than a miller. Worse, there is a possible burial of Elizabeth Reid 30 Mar 1798 when she wouid have been 5 years old. However this burial was at the Roman Catholic church of St Mary with St Peter (no extra information in the register) and the miller's children were baptized in the church of Scotland.
In the absence of any alternative, it will be assumed at present that Elizabeth, the miller's daughter did in fact marry John Grant. John was a baker, which is perhaps how he met the daughter of a mill worker.

ELIZABETH REID
Elizabeth married John Grant in Aberdeen in 1817, her father was George Reid a labourer in Aberdeen.
There is a suitable baptism at Old Machar, Aberdeen:
C 5Mar1793 Elizabeth Reid d George Reid, miller at Justice Mills and Margaret Smith his spouse.
baptised by Mr James Gregory, minister at Chapel of Ease; witness: James Brebner and John Smith
Marriage and all known baptisms to these parents:
C 4Mar1792 James Skene
m 26Sep1792 George Reid & Margaret Smith at Skene both in the parish
C 5Mar1793 Elizabeth Old Machar
C 12May1796 Jean Old Machar
C 18Jul1798 Margaret Amelia Old Machar
C 10Aug1800 John Skene
C 24Aug1806 Helen Skene
C 28Aug1809 Agnes Skene
d of George Reid in Ord and his wife Margaret Smith
There is no proof that this is Elizabeth Reid who married John Grant. She was married at a Roman Catholic church, whereas this baptism is at a Scottish Church. Her father George was a labourer in Aberdeen, whereas this George was a miller, though he may perhaps have ended his days as a labourer. This George moved to Skene some ten miles from Aberdeen so presumably his daughter Elizabeth would also have moved there, but his burial is not recorded at Skene, so he may have moved back to Aberdeen where there are several possible George Reid burials.
