William Gibbs was an agricultural labourer and spent most of his life in the village of Ratley in Warwickshire. He was living there when he married Mary Redding at Coventry about 20 miles away. They baptised seven children at Ratley and both were buried there, Mary in 1763, William two years later.
William Gibbs is a common name in Warwickshire at this time and his baptism has not been identified. it seems unlikely that he was born in Ratley, so a birthplace nearer Coventry seems possible.

William married in 1717 at Ratley so a birth date around 1690/70 is expected, but the registers of Ratley have not survived before 1701. There are numerous records of the Redding family at Ratley in the 18thC but none for Gibbs apart from William and Mary. The absence of Gibbs records, particularly of any possible burials of William's parents, suggests that William Gibbs was born elsewhere and settled into his wife's parish. Perhaps the marriage at Coventry suggests he may have come from this area. The nearest is at Berkswell (5miles) b12Apr1694 of unnamed parents or Hatton (10miles) C20Mar1689 son of William. One Ancester member (mbason183) considers her ancestor Joseph Gibbs (C 20Sep1690 at Berkswell, son of William) to be brother of William. However, there are many more William Gibbs baptised in this period in the counties of Warwick and Oxford - too many to investigate at present without extra information.
Mary Gibbs was baptised in 1717 at Ratley, daughter of William and Mary Gibbs. This is the first of seven baptisms to these parents, but there is no suitable preceding marriage. There is such a marriage however at Holy Trinity Church in Coventry:

Although Coventry is 20 miles from Ratley, the note that he was of Retly leaves no doubt that this is the correct marriage
