John was born about 1755, probably in Broughton, Oxfordshire, son of William & Mary.  He married Mary WIGSON in the nearby village of Tysoe, Warwickshire in 1776 and remained there for the rest of his life.

John & Mary baptised 8 children at Tysoe and were both buried there, Mary in 1820 aged 62; John was probably buried in 1814 aged 59.

BIRTH

John married and baptised his children in the village of Tysoe, Warwickshire, but there are two possible burials of John there, in 1814 and 1823, from which he was born either in 1751 or in 1755.  This fits with his wife’s age as she was baptised in 1757, but no suitable baptism for John exists at Tysoe.  John Baylis is a common name in this region of England with at least 11 possible baptisms within 20 miles of Tysoe.  Some of these (Beoley, Budbrooke 1750, Bidford) can be excluded because of later B or m in the parish.  Leaving the following:

Broughton OXF        6 miles 22Jun1755 William & Mary

Whitchurch WAR      10 miles 15Dec1754 John & Sara

Oddington GLS       15 miles 30Sep1753 Richard & Mary

Stratton Audley OXF 16 miles  8Jul1753 John & Mary

Budbrooke WAR       20 miles 26Dec1750 John

Alvechurch WOR      20 miles 30Dec1757 William & Mary

1801 Frances BAYLIS was a witness to a marriage at Broughton

B 22May1763 William BAYLIS of Broughton

B 25Dec1782 Mary BAYLIS wid of Broughton

Since John baptised his second son William and his second daughter Mary and also used the names Elizabeth Frances and Hannah for other children, and the baptismal date agrees with the second burial age, this seems a very likely baptism.  The presence of Frances BAYLIS as a witness in 1801 is interesting.  She cannot be Fanny, the daughter of William baptised in 1763, as Fanny was married in 1788.  Could she be Frances BAYLIS-5 baptised 1783 at Tysoe dau of John & Mary, and thus granddaughter of William & Mary of Broughton?

other children of parents from Whitchurch

m  1Oct1751 John Baylis & Sara Rutter
C 15Dec1754 John
C 20Feb1757 Richard
C 13Dec1760 Thomas

John did not use the names Sara Richard or Thomas for his children so this seems unlikely to be the right baptism

no other children of Richard and Mary of Oddington are known, but John did not use Richard for his children

children of John & Mary of Stratton Audley are William 1746, Ann 1748, John 1750, Mary 1751, Elizabeth 1755, Susanna 1757,Robert 1759.   Ann, Susanna and Robert were not used by John for his children

The most likely origin of John seems to be the Broughton baptism; though far from proved, at present,  this will be assumed to be his origin

MARRIAGE

Frances BAYLISS-5 was baptised at Tysoe WAR in 1783, daughter of John & Mary.  A series of baptisms to these parents at Tysoe is preceded by the following marriage at Tysoe

m  2Nov1776 John x BAYLIS & Mary WIGSON witness: George WATTS; James MISTER; by banns

There are no other BAYLIS families at this time in Tysoe
