Robert George was born around 1640 just at the start of the Civil War, the son of a blacksmith.  He married twice and baptised at least seven children in Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire where he was also probably a blacksmith.  His first wife Elizabeth died after the birth and burial of their fourth child.  He remarried almost immediately and had three more children by his second wife Anne

Robert die in 1714 aged around 70 and was buried in Steeple Aston.  Anne was also buried there three years later.

BIRTH

Robert was first married in 1670, baptised children up to 1690 and died in 1714, so a birth date around 1640/50 would be expected.  His known life events all took place in Steeple Aston, but his baptism is not recorded there.  The English civil war began in 1642 and parish registers were generally neglected until the restoration in 1660. Steeple Aston registers however appear to be complete, though it is possible that some entries were made after the event relying on memory.

When Robert baptised his first known child in 1674 he was known as Robert the younger, which normally implies that he had a father Robert still living in the parish.  He was not described as 'the younger' for his next child's baptism in 1676, and there is a burial of a Robert George in between in 1675, undoubtedly his father.  This is confirmed by his will which leaves his estate to his eldest son Robert.  As discussed in Robert George-10, his wife was Isabel, he baptised two children at Steeple Aston in 1648 and 1654, and was born in 1607

It is concluded therefore that Robert-9 was born around 1640 son of Robert and Isabel George

MARRIAGE

Martha George-8 was baptised in Steeple Aston in 1690 daughter of Robert and Anne George.  Two previous baptisms to these parents took place at this church in 1685 and 1688; but immediately preceding these, four baptisms to Robert and Elizabeth George took place between 1673 and 1681 followed by the burial of Elizabeth George, wife of Robert, in 1683.  No baptisms to Robert and Anne took place before the death of Elizabeth so it seems almost certain that Robert married first Elizabeth around 1670 and then Anne around 1684.

Neither of these marriages has been identified.  Neither took place in Steeple Aston though the register there is well preserved for the period.    There is a possible marriage to Ann at St Brides, Fleet St, London:

m 24Jun1685 Robert George celebs & Ann Carter solute by licence

The names and date - 6 months before the baptism of Robert and Anne's first child - are just right, but celebs = bachelor or unmarried, and this is a regular church marriage, not a clandestine marriage at the Fleet.   And why would they marry in London? Probably therefore the marriages took place in the bride's parish and the records have not survived
