Martha was born in 1842 in the Oxfordshire village of Kirtlington, the second child of stonemason Thomas Young and his wife Rebecca, and baptised in the nearby parish of Forest Hill.
In 1865 aged 23 she had an illegitimate child born in Kirtlington and baptised there as Albert William. Four years later she had a second illegitimate child born in London but baptised in Kirtlington as Sydney Thomas Carter Young.
In 1871, Martha was a cook to the Pope family in Marylebone. Her younger sister Frances Rebecca was a housemaid there, while her two sons remained at the family home with Martha’s parents back in Kirtlington.
While in London she met Thomas Badsey a mason, and married him in 1874 at St Luke’s Chelsea. In 1881 they were in Barking in East London where Thomas was now a policeman with Martha’s son, now known as William Badsey. Her other son, now known as Thomas S C (Sydney Carter) Young remained in Kirtlington.
Thomas and Martha seem to have separated; in 1891, Martha was a dressmaker living with her married sister Frances Rebecca in Bethnal Green; but seeking parish relief in 1893 she was ordered from Bethnal Green back to Barking, though Thomas was now in Acton, West London.
Thomas Badsey died in 1899, and Martha returned to Kirtlington to look after her father, now styling herself a “medical and mental nurse”. After her father's death she nursed a widow and her son Edwin in nearby Weston on the Green, and married Edwin in 1920 aged 75.
Martha died in 1928 aged 86. |
