since both John & Elizabeth have the surname WRIGHT, their records are dealt with together in this file
|
Although both John & Elizabeth shared the surname WRIGHT and both were born in Mousehole, it is believed that they were no closer related than third cousins, the WRIGHT surname being very common in the parish in the 18th century
John was a fisherman like most men in Mousehole, and they were married at Paul parish church in 1769. They baptised nine children there before 1786, including twins. All seem to have survived childhood.
They both lived to their 80’s and died within three years of each other; both were buried in Paul churchyard |

John and Elizabeth married in 1769, so birth dates around 1745 is expected; there are three possible John baptisms at Paul:
C30Dec1732 John s Martin WRIGHT
C17Mar1735 John s Martin WRIGHT
C 4Apr1743 John s John & Clarinda WRIGHT
the last baptism however can be assumed to be the correct one with some confidence, as John-6A baptised his second daughter (one of twins) with the unusual name Clarinda
there are only two possible baptisms of Elizabeth at Paul
C18Oct1741 Elizabeth d Martin & Mary WRIGHT
C14Jul1745 Elizabeth d Martin & Mary WRIGHT
there is a burial of Elizabeth at Paul between these two events:
B 11Jul1742 Elizabeth WRIGHT infant
so it can safely be assumed that Elizabeth-6A was baptised in 1745.
As shown below there are suitable burials at Paul for both John & Elizabeth born 1743 and 1745
Jane WRIGHT-5 was baptised at Paul in 1776 daughter of John & Elizabeth; the baptism is preceded by only one suitable marriage at Paul:
m22Apr1769 John WRIGHT otp fisherman & Elizabeth x WRIGHT spr otp by banns wit: John WRIGHT, Martin WRIGHT

w:John WRIGHT Peter KNEEBONE
C 30Apr1786 James s John & Elizabeth WRIGHT B10Mar1866 James WRIGHT Mousehole 80 [b1786]
as John & Elizabeth were married in 1769 and baptised children up to 1786 they must have died after 1786 and before 1840. There are two possible John burials at Paul:
B18Jul1790 John WRIGHT
B 6Mar1825 John WRIGHT Mousehole 82 [b1743]
the second burial gives a birth date in exact accord with the baptism of John, and will be assumed to be correct. There are numerous possibilities for the burial of John in 1790, but no other John C about 1743.
there is only one possible burial of Elizabeth meeting the above criteria:
B 2Feb1828 Elizabeth WRIGHT Mousehole 83 [b1745]
