James RONALD was a perfumer and hairdresser in Montrose. He married Jean FAIRLEY there in 1794 and had at least 6 children. James attended the Episcopalian Church of St Peter in Montrose where records commence in 1800 though there were RONALDs in Montrose at a much earlier date. Jean probably died in 1812 and James in 1814, both buried in Montrose |

James RONALD was married in Montrose 1794 so probably born around 1770 No suitable baptism has been found in the OPR; his children were baptised and married in Episcopal churches and it is probable that James was also baptised in an Episcopal church.
Very few RONALD records are in the Montrose
OPR. Two early burials and a marriage
were found:

Books of the Episcopal church in Montrose from 1718 to 1842 are held by the
University of Dundee. However the name
RONALD does not appear,. although a Baillie RENNALD was a meeting manager from
1718 to 1721. This is surprising as
James baptised children there from at least 1800 and James’ son James was a
prominent member of the Episcopal church in Montrose; his burial record of 1874
notes that he was a member of the Vestry, Secretary of the Congregation
etc. This raises the possibility that
James RONALD was a convert to the Episcopal church or more likely was a
newcomer to Montrose. Note that the
Montrose Burgh Court Claims records run from 1724 to 1856 but have references
to James only in 1799-1807
The marriage of James' daughter Jane was witnessed by James THIRD, and Jane stayed with him when she returned to Aberdeen after the death of the husband. The 1855 death certificate of James THIRD shows that he was married to Jane RONALD deceased. The death certificate also shows James THIRD had a nephew James RONALD who is almost certainly the son of James RONALD. The 1841 census shows James Third with his wife Jane and Margaret Ronald b1771/6 probably Jane's sister
Because of the close connection of James Third to the Ronald family, both Jane and Margaret are probable sisters of James Ronald-5
Peter Urquhart married to Isobel Ronald also had a close connection to James' family. His marriage record however shows that Isobel's father was John Ronald a mason of Aberdeen. It seems likely that he was another sibling of James Ronals-5
The death
certificate of Jane RONALD-4 states that her parents were James RONALD and Jane
formerly FAIRLIE. She was baptised at
Montrose Episcopal church in 1809, daughter of James and Jane FINDLAY; two
years later, Gordon RONALD was baptised the son of James and Jane FAIRLEY;
these baptisms are preceded by a suitable marriage in the Montrose register:
m 11May1794 James RONNALD & Jean
FAIRLEY both otp proclaimed
only two baptisms have been found, both on records held at the Montrose Episcopal Church of St Peter. Six other children have been deduced or assumed from other records:

James was
already dead by 1833 as shown by daughter Robina's marriage; there is a
suitable burial at Montrose:
B
1Jun1814 James RONNALD
No age
given, but as the surname is relatively uncommon, and the date fits between the
baptism of the last known child in 1811 and the date 1833, it is very probable
that this burial refers to James-5. Two
years previously there is a burial of Jean FAIRLEY, which may refer to Jame's
wife:
B 12Sep1812 Jean FAIRLEY
Son James
stayed in Montrose, but 3 daughters married in Aberdeen after 1823, and son
John was a shipmaster there in 1834. It
