William was born in 1738 in Colchester, but his father enlisted in the Army even before William’s brother Harvey was born in 1740; by 1745, William and his brother were in the care of a widow, Elizabeth Mann, either a step-mother or possibly a grandmother. When he was 14, William was apprenticed to a blacksmith in the nearby parish of Abberton. He completed his apprenticeship in 1749 thereby gaining settlement in the parish. After this he served in the army in the 7 year war, during which he married Elizabeth Stiles at Colchester in 1762. The following year, Elizabeth, expecting their first child, was removed from Colchester to Abberton. The child was baptised at Abberton in 1763, but then the family returned to Colchester where their second son was born. William was now with his family, but they were all removed to Abberton, only to return once again to Colchester for the birth of their third son John in 1767. The Elizabeth Mann baptised in Lexden near Colchester in 1777 was probably their daughter and the William Mann buried at St Botolph in Colchester may have been this William, but the relevance of either event cannot be confirmed.

William was apprenticed in 1753 and married in 1763 at Colchester St James. The normal apprenticeship is at age 14 for seven years, so a birth date of 1739 is expected. There is a suitable baptism at St James:

Nathaniel MANN-5 was baptised in 1765 at Colchester All Saints, son of William & Elizabeth. There is a suitable marriage in the neighbouring parish of Colchester St James (the churches are less than ¼ mile apart):

[many researchers have concluded that this William maried Mary Rafe at Kirby-le-Soken in 1784. However a yDNA comparison to test this idea proved negative. The comparison was between myself, an all male descendant of William's brother Nathaniel, and an all male decendant of the Kirby William Mann. The result showed that any connection between us would have much langer ago than 18th century.  So it seems the Kirby William Mann was not this William]

William & Elizabeth at Abberton can be assumed to be the same as the Colchester parents as there is a removal order of Elizabeth MANN from St Botolph Colchester to Abberton dated 28Apr1763 and another removal order of William & Elizabeth MANN & children from St Botolph to Abberton dated 14Dec1765. It is not yet proved that the Lexden baptism refers to the same parents

There are possible burials of William and Elizabeth:

Since Elizabeth STILES-6 named her second child Nathaniel, it seems possible that she was the daughter of Nathaniel & Hannah born about 1740 but no such baptism has been located.
