BIRTH

 

Henry was married in 1792 at Shoreditch St Leonard  so a birth around 1770 is expected.  There are other possible baptisms for such a relatively common name, but the most probable is at Shoreditch St Leonard:

This is assumed to be the correct baptism as it occurred in the parish where he was married and because Henry named his first daughter Margaret; (also Henry's daughter Deborah named her last son Charles Alfred).  The 1851 census has a Henry Harris aged 79 which fits with this baptism

MARRIAGE

 

Deborah-5 was baptised at Newington St Mary in 1805, daughter of Henry & Phebe HARRIS.  The unusual combination of forenames identifies other baptisms to these parents in East End of London, and these are preceded by the following marriage at Shoreditch St Leonard:

the unusual names of the parents make it probable that these are all their descendants despite the 25 year span. Interesting to note the occupation of Henry as a brickmaker, as  some of Deborah's descendants were involved with the same trade at Enfield (see NEWMAN)

Phoebe was in Islington when she baptised her last child in 1818 and there is a subsequent burial there of a Phoebe Harris:

It cannot be proved that this is the correct burial, but it is the right place, time and age, and a relatively uncommon name.

Henry married and baptised his children in the Anglican church so it seems unlikely that he would have been admitted to the Jewish Hospital.  However, there is a family tradition that Deborah Gibbons (1851-1938) was a "little Jewish lady"; she was Henry's gr.grandaughter. Two of Henry's children were named Deborah and Benjamin which can be Jewish names. His wife died in 1837 thus preceding a possible entry to the Hospital. Henry was known to be a brick maker, not a book binder, but brick making is heavy labour and he may have learned a new trade in old age at the hospital.

 

At present it will be assumed that Henry was in the Jewish hospital. but further evidence is needed

DAVIS family

The burial of Phoebe Davis gives a birth year of about 1774; Only one suitable baptism has been found, together with that of a sister:

John and Mary Harris are common names; John and Mary Harris baptising around this time at St George included  a gentleman, a cowkeeper and a farmer but only these two to a salesman.
