John EVANS married and died in the small Hampshire village of Froyle, but was not baptised there. His occupation, parents and place of birth are unknown Two children of John are known, James and Sarah, both baptised at Froyle. Sarah married a farmer in Guildford; James became a wealthy wine merchant in Slough and bequeathed property near there to Sarah's children
John was buried in Froyle churchyard in 1819, and his son James was buried alongside where their gravestone still stands |

John was buried in 1819 aged 79 or 80, giving a birth year of about 1740 consistent with his marriage in 1770. He married, baptised his children and died in Froyle, but there is no baptism there, and very few EVANS records at all. A great many Froyle records are on line at www.Froyle.com but contain no other records of the Evans family besides those on this site. Baptism indexes provide a few John Evans baptisms around 1740 but none nearer than 20 miles from Froyle and which, if any are, correct is not known
John’s son James became a wealthy wine merchant in

If this were the correct baptism, it might explain why his son James moved back to Slough but why should John move nearly 30 miles to marry and die in Froyle? His bride was a local girl baptised in Froyle
James the wine merchant bequeathed property in Windsor to his sister Sarah and her children, and many of them moved subsequently to this area. The connection with Windsor/Slough area clearly stems from James and does not prove any earlier connection of the Evans family
Sarah was baptised in 1780 at Froyle Hants, daughter of John & Elizabeth EVANS. One other baptism to these parents was found at Froyle in 1773, and this was preceded by the following marriage in the same parish:
