Martha was born in 1700 at Great Bentley in Essex, the daughter of Robert a farmer. She married another farmer at Little Bentley when she was 23 and lived in the nearby parish of Elmstead.
Martha and Hugh had at least eight children at Elmstead though two died as infants. Hugh died in 1774 and his will shows he was a relatively wealthy man leaving £20 pa and the residue of his estate to Martha who was appointed executor of his will together with son Hugh.
Martha outlived her husband by seven years before she died aged 81 and was buried at Elmstead |

Martha's marriage licence allegation of December 1722 states she was a single woman of Much Bentley aged 22. So she was born about 1700 probably in Great Bentley. The parish register of Great Bentley is in poor condition in this period but a few Burton baptisms can be seen at this time, children of Robert Burton. Martha's baptism cannot be seen, but the 1722 will of Robert Burton of Great Bentley confirms that he had a daughter Martha and that his wife was Mary.
Martha Burton therefore was born about 1700 at Great Bentley, daughter of Robert and Mary Burton
Martha Burton married Hugh Simons at Little Bromley:
