George Brown was born about 1790 at White Waltham near Maidenhead, but he lived most of his life in North Town, a hamlet one mile north of Maidenhead. He was a garden labourer or gardener. He married Sarah DOUGLAS from Bray in London in 1813, perhaps because their first child was born just 6 weeks later. They had thirteen children of whom at least four died young.

George died in 1858 and Sarah died a year later. Both were buried at Cookham Holy Trinity

BIRTH

According to the 1851 and 61 census, George BROWN was born 1790/1 at Waltham Berkshire or 1788/9 from his death certificate. The former is more reliable giving a probably birth date of 1790.

There are two Walthams in Berkshire, White Waltham and Waltham St Lawrence, both a few miles south of Maidenhead. There are no Brown baptisms at St Lawrence in the 1790s though the baptismal registers seem complete. 

At White Waltham there seems to be some confusion between this parish and the parish of Wasing in the transcript indexes of Family Search, Ancestry etc. Baptisms formerly recorded at White Waltham are now indexed as Wasing. Only one baptism is included in the current transcript index for any family between 1777 and 1801 at White Waltham. Census returns however record many individuals who gave White Waltham as their birth place between these dates and the Berkshire Register Office has confirmed that at least the following two baptisms now indexed at Wasing were in fact at White Waltham:

Both George baptisms are 5 years away from expected and the naming patterns do not help particularly, though George baptised a Thomas but not a Robert, so the second marriage might be preferred but if George were baptised in 1796 then he would be only 17 at marriage.

It will be necessary to examine the original registers to determine the correct parish for these families.

The Cookham register shows a George BROWN baptised in the expected year 1791, one of three illegitimate children of Elizabeth BROWN:

The Cookham George could be the correct one but until the original White Waltham registers have been examined, no conclusion can be reached. George baptised at least one child at the non-conformist chapel of the Countess of Huntingdon. His own baptism may therefore have been non-conformist.

MARRIAGE

From the b certificate of Eliza, George BROWN married Sarah DOUGLAS. The only marriage found in any index occurred at St Pauls Shadwell in London:

The correct names for both partners and the date immediately before the first baptism confirms this as the correct marriage. The marriage here may perhaps be because the bride was 8 months pregnant or perhaps the groom was only 17 years old. Why Shadwell was chosen of all London churches is not known.

It would be an unusual coincidence for a father-in-law to have the same surname as his son-in-law and it seems this should be George BROWN; he is at the same address as in 1851 and of the right age. (The enumerator entered the surnames of Eliza. Emma, and George as “ditto” to the head of the family). George had a daughter Eliza bc1838, so if she married James Humphries, then George would be James’ father-in-law as stated in the census. However a search of the marriage indexes shows only a marriage of James HUMPHRIES to Eliza PUSEY, registered at Cookham in 4Q1859. The probable explanation is that Eliza Brown married Pusey before she married Humphreys, and there is a suitable marriage and death in the index:
