Richard BROOKBANKS was born in the small
Worcestershire village of Pendock in 1770, but
moved to London as a young man where he became a baker, leasing a bakers shop
at 38 King St, Seven Dials. He and Eleanor ASBURY baptised a son Christopher
at
Six more children were born and baptised at St Martins or nearby St Giles in the Field before Eleanor died in 1813. In 1819, Richard married Ann WOODWARD and shortly after, his eldest son Christopher completed his apprenticeship as a baker and moved to the baker’s shop with his wife Arabella. Richard’s second wife died in 1827 and, three
years later, he married a widow Rebecca ROBERTS at Richard died in 1851 aged 81 at the home of his
married daughter Elizabeth in Kensington.
He was buried in the family grave at St Giles along with his three
wives. His will left everything,
including the rent from the baker's shop, to his surviving children,
Elizabeth HALL, Richard, and William who had emigrated

census, Richard was born c1770 in Pendock,
Worcestershire. There is just one
suitable baptism there:

Richard & Eleanor. The only suitable
marriage found took place 3 years later at adjacent St Mary-le-Strand:

Despite
the timing, the unusual combination of names suggests that this is the correct
marriage
An MI in
St Giles Church (see below) refers not only to Richard’s first wife Eleanor, but
to his second wife Ann and his third wife Rebecca. These marriages have also been found:

mind and understanding, I Richard Brookbanks residing
at Elizabeth Terrace in the Parish of St Lukes
Chelsea in the County of Middlesex, Gentleman, do make my last will in manner
following: First I desire that I may be buried in my Family Grave at St Giles
New Burial Ground, and after my funeral expenses and all my lawful debts are
paid, I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Hall or her heirs the
improved rent of Five pounds 5s pr annum arising out of a Bakers shop situated
No 38 King Street Seven Dials London, on Lease to Mr Turner for Twenty one
years untill the expiration of the said lease; I also
give and bequeath my leasehold house No 3 Alfred Street, formerly Thornhaugh St Bedford Square, on lease to Mr William Ellis
at Forty Pounds pr annum, and also all other the residue of my Personal
Property I give and bequeath the same to my two sons Richard Brookbanks residing in Ann Street Waterloo Road and William
Brookbanks now residing in Philadelphia in the United
States of America and also my daughter Elizabeth Hall of Earl Street
Kensington, to be equally divided betwixt them as tenants in common or their
heirs; And I hereby appoint my friend Mr William Harrington of Edward Square,
Executors and also my daughter Elizabeth Hall of Earl Street Kensington, Joint
Executrix; and desire that the above property may be sold as soon as convenient
after my decease and divided as directed; and also my Will is that my said
Executor and Executrix named may at all times reimburse and indemnify
themselves and deduct all such costs, charges, damages and expenses as either
of them may occur or expend, and that neither of them shall be answerable or
accountable for any loss that may happen to the said trust premises; And I
hereby revoke all other wills as heretofore made and so declare this present
will to be my last Will and Testament; In witness hereof I have hereunto set my

of Elizabeth Terrace in the Parish of St Luke Chelsea in the County of
Middlesex but late of Earl Street Kensington in the same County, deceased, left
unadministered by Elizabeth Hall, Widow, deceased,
whilst living, the daughter and the surviving Executor named in the said Will,
was granted to Richard Brookbanks, the son and one of
the residuary legatees named in the said Will, having been first sworn duly to
administer. The said Executor died
